This publication is isued to coincide with the exhibition New Symbols for the Netherlands. It contains essays by Bregtje van der Haak (documentary maker), Chris Keulemans (writer), Anna Tilroe (art critic), Cor Wagenaar (historian) and Rutger Wolfson (curator). It also includes reports of two discussions of whether artists should appropriate the role of symbol-makers and if so, which values these symbols should express. Both the essayists and the artists invited for the exhibition took part in these discussions.
