Berend Strik en One Architecture present the investigation into Middelburg`s urban condition examined urban expansionism in the Netherlands – and particularly in Middelburg.

Berend Strik en One Architecture present the investigation into Middelburg`s urban condition was a reflection on urban development in Dutch towns, particularly Middelburg. At the back of De Vleeshal a sharp and high paced video film was screened, showing a cook working on a sugar sculpture of De Vleeshal and Middelburg`s town hall.

The front of the hall was dominated by a red inflatable. Its blazing shape evoked phallic associations reminiscent of growth, potency, and power – but also threat and destruction. From somewhere inside the inflatable came a melancholy song, with the recurrent line Schrumf, Stadtelein, Schrumpf (Shrink, little city, shrink) composed by Mariecke van der Linden and sung by Mieke Stemerdink.
