Chris Cunningham has made music videos for artists such as Aphex Twin, Madonna and Björk. His first work of art, flex, was shown at De Vleeshal.
Chris Cunningham began his career in special effects, working on films such as Alien III and AI, the science fiction film Stanly Kubrick was never able to complete. He achieved international fame through the music videos he has made for, among others, Aphex Twin, Madonna, Björk and Squarepusher. These videos contain highly disturbing images and are very subversive within the medium of video clips. And yet, because of their enormous creativity and originality, they have often been broadcast.
flex, Cunningham’s first work to be presented within the context of the visual arts, is an exploration of anatomy and sexuality. A male and a female body and their shadows are caught up in a primitive choreography. The images are abstract, serene and utterly beautiful – and at the same time violent and explicit. Remarkable, too, is the relationship between the imagery and the electronic music, which is the result of a collaboration between Cunningham and Richard D. James.
