Early 1998 De Vleeshal presented four sculptures by Lara Schnitger: Space Invader.

Early in 1998 four Space Invader sculptures by Lara Schnitger took over De Vleeshal. In creating her sculptures, Schnitger uses humble materials – plastic bin liners for instance, glued foam rubber and stretch fabrics – that, though her handling, acquire unexpected power and plasticity.

Schnitger`s sculptures gave De Vleeshal the `feel` of a natural history museum. Their shapes are reminiscent of cartoon characters, prehistoric animals or aliens. But they could equally well be mythical creatures: Tibet`s yeti, or the Loch Ness monster. Or, as described by David Bowie in his song Moonage Daydream (The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust), from which the title of the exhibition was derived:
I’m an alligator
I’m a mama, papa coming for you
I’m a space invader
I’m a rock `n roller made for you.

The positioning of the sculptures in De Vleeshal disturbed the space`s classic proportions and so reinforced their weirdness. They were not there to please – they stood waiting, to devour the audience.
