Pieter Slagboom (1956, lives and works in Middelburg) is best known for his installations and environmental works. However, over the past four years he has worked primarily on a large series of pencil drawings. De Kabinetten van De Vleeshal were the first to present a selection of these drawings.

Pieter Slagboom has a style all of his own. Colourful and wiggly lines form his signature. Recurrent motifs such as female figures, judges, lemon squeezers, monkeys and drifting inland vessels constitute symbols that are highly personal but at the same time intuitably recognizable. Domesticity and security go hand in hand with oppression; intimacy with estrangement; and love with judgement.

Drawings 2001-2004 did not just present existing works. Especially for the exhibition, Slagboom created two new drawings: straight onto the walls of De Kabinetten van De Vleeshal. And so these new drawings had a direct relationship with the architectural space they were made for – as did Slagboom`s earlier installations and environmental works, which were always inspired by the architecture of their surroundings.
