Vleeshal Center for Contemporary Art in Middelburg, the Netherlands, is seeking a Curator (32 - 36hrs), starting February 1, 2026. Applications are due 26 November.

About the Role

The Curator works closely with the Executive Director to support all aspects of Vleeshal’s exhibitions and art commissioning activities, both curatorially and administratively. The position plays a key role in continuing and expanding the institution’s curatorial vision, ensuring that Vleeshal maintains an active and distinctive voice locally, nationally, and internationally.

Responsibilities include developing and realizing exhibitions in Vleeshal’s main location, as well as off-site presentations through its nomadic programs, public programs, and digital initiatives. The Curator ensures that the program remains lively, rigorous, and inspiring—with a strong emphasis on hospitality toward both artists and audiences.

The Curator is responsible for oversight and liaison with artists, contributors, and partner institutions for co-commissions and touring projects. The position reports to the Executive Director and works in close coordination with the Production Manager, the Communications Officer, and the Participation and Executive teams.

This is a one-year appointment with the intention to extend.

Requirements

The ideal candidate:

  • Has at least four years of curatorial experience in contemporary art;
  • Possesses in-depth knowledge of both regional and international art contexts, and an active, relevant professional network;
  • Demonstrates strong writing, editing, and communication skills (digital editing skills are a plus);
  • Is responsive, decisive, empathetic, and deeply committed to the role of art and cultural institutions;
  • Is fluent in both Dutch and English, spoken and written;
  • Is willing to reside in or near Middelburg.

Terms of Employment

Vleeshal offers a salary according to the De Zaak Nu scale, commensurate with experience. The position includes participation in a pension scheme, entitlement to vacation days, and a holiday and sports allowance.
