Reception Commemorating the Liberation of Middelburg

On November 6, 1944, Middelburg was liberated by Allied forces during the Battle of the Scheldt. Over eighty years later, Vleeshal reflects on the traces left by the war in Zeeland.

During the evening, we will discuss the ways in which memories of war are passed down and preserved within families. Special attention will be given to decorated and repurposed artillery shells: objects made in Zeeland after the war from remnants of the fighting, many of which are still kept in households today.

Program

The evening will open with a welcome by Alderman Tobias van Gent. Afterwards, there will be an occasion to share stories among the various people from Zeeland who have temporarily lent their personal ornamented shells to Vleeshal.

The evening takes place in the context of Vleeshal’s current exhibition The Unburied Sounds of a Troubled Horizon by Tuấn Andrew Nguyễn. Alongside a film and sculptural installation by Nguyễn, Vleeshal presents a selection of decorated brass artillery shells from Zeeland, including one from the collection of Middelburg Stadhuis.
